Zhao Gongming: A Guardian of Prosperity

The Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods helped shape Zhao Gongming's enduring image as a God of Wealth. In the story, Jiang Ziya places him at the head of four divine attendants associated with treasure, precious goods, wealth and successful trade.

He is traditionally depicted riding a black tiger and bearing an iron whip and a gold ingot. The tiger evokes authority and the courage to confront obstacles. The whip stands for justice and honest dealings, while the ingot expresses a wish for abundance and good fortune.
